Successful EMSEA conference in Plymouth
In September the European Marine Science Educators Association's (EMSEA) held its 2nd conference on Ocean Literacy in Europe. The conference was organised by the Marine Biological Association (MBA) and held at Plymouth University. The EMSEA addresses teacher, marine educators and scientists to define ocean literacy, assess what the public knows about the ocean, and redress the lack of ocean-related content in state and national science education standards, instructional materials and assessments.
The EMSEA 2013 provided a great opportunity to learn more about marine education in practice and the discussion on Ocean Literacy in Europe. The talks and discussions were inspiring and showed a huge variety of different possibilities of how to get children, students and even adults involved in marine science.
The Micro B3 and OSD projects were presented by Anna Klindworth which marked the officially launch of the OSD citizen science and crowdfunding campaign and the brand new OSD teaser. We hope that the fruitful dialogue with the EMSEA network will help us to bring marine science to the next level. Citizen science projects and the way scientists collaborate with the public is still fairly new for us, hence, we were grateful for this opportunity to learn from their experience. We believe that the EMSEA with its connection to the ocean and dedication to enhance ocean literacy serves as a great basis for future collaborations.
